Poltava region

Poltava region is the region in the central area of Ukraine, virtually the entire territory of the region is situated in the east, in the central part of the Left-Bank Ukraine, and only a small part of the land area of Kremenchug district lies beyond the Dnieper - on the right bank.

The area of the region is 28.8 thousand square km (4.8% of Ukrainian territory), its length from north to south is 213.5 km, and the south-west to north-east - 259 km. It ranks 7th among the regions of Ukraine due to the magnitude.

Much of the area lies within the Pridneprovskaya lowlands, the extreme northeastern part - on the spurs of Srednerusskaya (Middle Russian) Upland, the extreme south-western part (right bank) - within Pridneprovskaya highlands.

The region is situated mainly in the area of forest-steppe zone, and its south-east - the steppe zone. Forests cover 7.4% of the area. The most common soils are black soils, which occupy 90% of the area.

On the territory of Poltava region there is a natural monument of national importance - the tract Parasotskoe, outcrops of tertiary sandstones, which arose 400-350 million years ago.

In the forests there are oaks, elms, pines, linden, ash, willow, wild pears and cherries. There are many fruit-bearing bushes - hazel, blackberry, wild rose, in the autumn there are many mushrooms in the woods - white, yellow boletus, saffron milk caps, russules, agaric honey. Also, Poltava region is the largest provider of medicinal herbs.

The climate of the region is temperate continental with moderately cold winter and warm summer.

On the territory of Poltava region there are 62 rivers with the length of more than 10 kilometers, which belong to the basin of the Dnieper, from which the largest are Vorskla, Psel, Sulla and others. In the southwest are located the Dneprodzerzhinsk and Kremenchug reservoirs.

In the Poltava region there was explored about 10 types of minerals - natural gas, oil, coal, peat, iron ore, construction materials. The region ranks first in Ukraine on deposits and production of oil and gas. Iron ore deposits are concentrated in the area of Kremenchug magnetic anomaly. In the region there are 20 sources of mineral medicinal and table waters.
